Oh Judy, I am so sorry you have gone through this. How horrible. A sore throat is so easy to ignore. Thank you for the warning.
UNC REX has finally gotten permission to bring all the volunteers back. Only 150 have said they wanted to return at this time. Most are waiting until the fall to return. Our Infection Control Director is requiring all volunteers meet with him mostly by Webex to return. I hope this will no longer be required in a couple of months.
Keep us posted on your recovery. All my best, Melinda

Hello everyone!
I feel like I am out of the loop on every aspect of volunteer services. I made it through the pandemic without getting Covid. However, on March 26th I was working at our Covid Vaccine clinic and just simply walked across the room and something vary minor (I thought) popped in my knee. I did not mediately stop what I was doing, but within 15 minutes I became very nauseous with pain. Long story short, I have been out of work 31/2 months, had 4 surgeries. 3 in my hospital and 1 in Chapel Hill. It was a sore throat that started around lunch the day before. When I awoke the next morning it was gone but my knee was a little tight. Then around 2pm that afternoon something popped. It was STREP IN MY KNEE. The strep left my throat and went to my knee. My infection culture rate was 250,000. FYI, 10,000 is considered an infection. The doctor said, you are blessed that the infection went to your knee because if it had gone to your heart or in you blood stream it could have been fatal.
Its been a long scary journey, but I shared all this to let all of you know that there are many Super Bugs out there now not just Covid. What happened to me was rare but it does happen. So if you get a sore throat please, please be careful and see your doctor.
Questions
- Do we have any information from our Virtual Conference that I could get? I paid my fee in hopes there would be literature.
- Will we have a face to face conference in 2022? I need to add it into my budget which is due July 9th .
- Of your pre-Covid number of volunteers, what percentage plans to return/ have returned?
- Have volunteers returned to their previous duties, if not which duties are they not allowed to do at this time?
- What new duties/ if any have you added to the volunteer's daily routine?
- Did you re-orient volunteers with new Covid guidelines, if possible could you share?
Thanks for everyone! It is so beneficial to me as well as countless others in our organization who learn from the brilliant minds of the NCHVP leaders.
